Orphanage Tour

B Orphanage TourOn September 24, 2010, Len Gengel, Bernie Gengel, architect Paul Fallon and Lex Edme flew into Port au Prince, Haiti with the final destination of Grand Goave, a two hour ride on Route 2 outside of the City. Located on a hill lush with green growth overlooking the Atlanic Ocean with a 240 degree view of the horizon, the 2 acre site is centered by a Mango tree ripe with fruit. The Mango tree will be the central focal point of Brit’s orphanage, designed in the shape of the letter “B” by Paul Fallon. The orphanage will house 66 Haitian children: 33 girls and 33 boys symbolic of the 33 days Brit was missing at the Hotel Montana. The first floor of the orphanage will include two Play Courtyards surrounding a central dining area. Rooms running around the courtyard include a kitchen, laundry, office, and living room. There will also be an infirmary and dental clinic for the children in need of medical and dental treatment. The remainder of the first floor will include bedrooms for the orphanage’s matrons and bedrooms or “quad rooms” to be shared by four children. The second level will include guest rooms, community rooms, matron rooms and the children’s quad rooms. Plans are underway to begin construction of the orphanage in December of 2010 with a completion date of January 2012. Volunteers led by Brit’s father Len Gengel, who is a longtime builder in the Wachusett area, will begin the process of building Brit’s orphanage over the Holidays.
