(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – Britney Gengel was among more than 300,000 people killed in the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake in Port-au-Prince, the impoverished Caribbean country’s capital city.
The 19-year-old from Rutland, Mass., was a student at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. She had arrived in Haiti the day before the earthquake to work with orphans.
In memory of Britney, the Gengels are building an orphanage in Grand Goave, Haiti.
Be Like Brit, a nonprofit organization, was started by the Gengel family started.

Be Like Brit is thankful to Perini Construction of Framingham who donated the Portable Cement Plant that will make up to 12 yards an hour of Concrete!!! They also rented the bulldozer which will grade Brit's site to hold up during the Tropical Storms that are coming soon!!! A special thanks to Bob Naylor who visited Brit's site twice for Perini and to their President Robert Band who reached out to Be like Brit and said he wanted to help!!!
(CBS/CBSNews.com) – At 19, Britney Gengel traveled to Haiti on a humanitarian mission, arriving just one day before the country’s massive earthquake. Gengel passed away, but her memory lives on with the construction of a new orphanage.
(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – The father of a Massachusetts college student who died in the Haiti earthquake says he’s successfully found some land where he plans to build an orphanage named for his daughter.
Britney Gengel was on a humanitarian mission with other students from Lynn University in Florida when the earthquake hit in January. She was missing for 33 days before her body was recovered.
Britney’s father, Len Gengel, and her brother, Bernie, recently joined the FOX25 Morning News to talk more about the orphanage being built for Britney.

Be like Brit Foundation gave out the 4th Britney Gengel Shining Star Award on Friday night to U.S. Congressman Jim McGovern!!! Congressman McGovern was instrumental in getting permission from Sec. Clinton to allow 6 of us to travel to Haiti and specifically to the Hotel Montana, 10 days after the devastating Earthquake!!! He accompanied us to Haiti and the Hotel to make sure of our safety!!! He is a real life Hero in the Gengel Family and exemplifies the word Public Servant!!! We are blessed to have Jim McGovern as our Congressman!!! 9-17-10
