Smiling At Brits Home

Hello Everyone !

As I enter my third week, I've been continually asked, "are you homesick yet?" The answer is always 'No!' Brit's Home truly feels like home. It is impossible to feel sad or lonely here. There's always a smiling face greeting me, a hand to hold, or someone to laugh with. These 66 children have the best smiles of anyone I know.

As I mentioned in my last post, smiling comes very naturally at Brit's Home. The kids are constantly grinning ear to ear!

One example is, this week the children received their progress reports from school. Each child had his/her picture taken with the report. They couldn't have been more happy and excited to show it off. The report included comments of improvement in each subject. Everyone ran around, showing off their grades to their siblings. It was great to see them so excited about school!

Many of you know, the kids LOVE to dance and sing. They are always humming and singing lines from their favorite songs no matter what time of the day it is. The recent playlist includes Alicia Keys, Jason Derulo, Shakira, and many more. Every time a favorite comes on the speakers, the singing and laughter commence. Everyone loves learning new dances and teaching the Britsionaries some moves!

Yesterday morning during music lessons, the kids were taught a new song for worship. It's amazing to see how fast they can learn a new song, even if it is in English! The music teacher, Woncico, smiles as he plays the piano and teaches the children the new song line by line. In under an hour, everyone is singing their heart out, without looking at the lyrics. Throughout the rest of the day, I could hear many of the kids singing the song.

After music lessons, the kids had their first pool day ever! Everyone piled into the buses, and headed down the road for a new adventure. Since the pool could not fit all the kids at once, each age group took a turn while others jumped rope or played cards. The older kids jumped in first with Coach and a few staff members. Everyone loved it! As soon as I went to take a group picture, many of the kids did a thumbs up.

Today I joined the kids, caretakers, and other Britsionaries on a special excursion to Miragoane. Before we left, many of the children came up to me and said "we're going to see monkeys!" I laughed and wasn't sure what to expect, but they were right! After a drive filled with beautiful views of Haiti's mountains, we arrived to a small park with 2 monkeys and a few peacocks. The kids' faces were priceless as the monkeys jumped around the cage. I looked around and saw some laughing, some focused, and others with their jaw dropped and couldn't look away. It was definitely a fun experience!

There are so many reasons to smile at Brit's Home but one of my favorite reasons has to be when a new Britsionary group arrives at Brit's Home. Since I've been here a few weeks so far, I've been able to see groups come and go. Nothing is better than seeing the smiles on the children when a new group walks in the front door. They sing to welcome the group, while looking around the room, making eye contact with their soon-to-be new friends.

If you haven't already, I hope you'll make a trip to Brit's Home soon to spend a week smiling and making new memories with these wonderful, fabulous kids!
