At Brit’s Home, we know our mission goes beyond providing a home for children. It’s also about creating a nurturing environment where our staff members can thrive, learn, and make a lasting difference in the lives of the children they serve. Today, we spotlight one of our incredible team members, Shaïla Antonella Zéphyr, whose passion for teaching and caring is shaping the next generation.
Q&A with Our Nurse Shaïla Antonella Zéphyr
Tell us about yourself
I am Shaïla Antonella Zéphyr, a 23-year-old registered nurse (BSN, RN) born and raised in Grand-Goâve, Haiti. I am a Christian and the only child of my mother. I graduated from the Faculty of Nursing Sciences of Léogâne (FSIL) at the Episcopal University of Haiti. Currently, I work as a nurse at Be Like Brit Orphanage.
What do you do as a nurse at Brit's Home?
As a nurse, I oversee the health of all the children at Brit’s Home. This includes:
- Administering medications and nursing care for well-being and recovery.
- Facilitating hospital visits for specialized medical follow-ups.
- Conducting medical training sessions.
- Supervising weekly room cleanliness.
- Assisting with feeding younger children and even styling their hair.
- Encouraging and motivating children to excel academically.
How was your first year at Be Like Brit Orphanage?
My first year was a wonderful experience. I felt like I joined a family, and I don’t regret a single moment. It’s been a blessing to work here and contribute to such meaningful work.
What does working at Brit's Home mean to you?
This role is more than just a job, it’s a stepping stone for my professional growth and a blessing in my life. In Haiti, finding employment is challenging, so I am incredibly grateful to be welcomed into this organization. Brit’s Home is one of the most respected institutions in Grand Goâve and beyond, and I am proud to be part of it.
How has working here changed your life?
Working at Brit’s Home has brought economic stability and independence. I can support myself, which is empowering. Socially, I’ve developed a deeper connection with children, an opportunity I didn’t have growing up as an only child. This work has taught me love, empathy, patience, and perseverance.
What do you find rewarding about your work?
I feel immense gratitude for the leadership at Brit’s Home. Their kindness, compassion, and care for both employees and children inspire me every day. It’s rewarding to know that my work contributes to an organization that values the well-being and growth of everyone involved.
Are there certain children that you are training or focusing on specifically?
Yes, I focus on Venite Miselin, a child with a keen interest in medicine. I train her on:
- Recognizing common illnesses.
- Performing basic first aid.
- Understanding medications, including their uses, side effects, and contraindications.
- Taking vital signs.
Watching her enthusiasm and curiosity grow is one of the most fulfilling parts of my role.
